On Monday nights we rock out at the Underground Gym. Come join us as we get our sweat on and rock out while working our glutes, legs, abs and arms.
Join us Thursday night at 7 pm for yoga class. The class is beginner friendly and there is typically a lot of laughing. But(!), we do get to work and students are making great progress. Hope, our instructor, helps the students get into the proper alignment and get into a deeper stretch. You may even find a child join the class. We welcome all yoga levels. See you soon!
Underground Gym owner, pastor helps with body, soul
NEWARK – Jacob Foulk said he had a wild lifestyle growing up, but changed all that and wants to help others do the same.
For 10 years, his efforts have focused on the soul, as pastor at non-denominational Prevailing Life Church, 32 N. 26th St., in Newark. Now, he wants to help people improve their body, as well.
Foulk opened Underground Gym on June 1, at 102 1/2 East Main St., in the basement of the Knights of Pythias Building.
"It wasn't until I became an adult that I turned my life to Christ, and began working on the body and the soul," Foulk said. "I've transformed my life and I'd like to help transform others."
The entrance to Underground Gym may be a little obscure and understated, but it leads to an abundance of workout and fitness rooms, with eight instructors teaching classes seven days a week.
The entrance can be found in the alley next to The Advocate parking lot. Impact Martial Arts recently moved out of the building into a new location on Mount Vernon Road.
Foulk had worked out in a small gym in the basement that was part of Impact Martial Arts. He saw the former gym space and areas used for storage, or unused, as an opportunity.
e said the 10,000-square feet of space looks a lot different after a six-month remodel.
"People have seen this, but they haven't seen it since we've redone it," Foulk said. "We saw the potential to transform this place. We totally cleaned it out."
The gym includes a main lounge area with a television, cardio machines, a jujitsu room with a cage, a kick-boxing room, a weight room, a women's-only weight room, multiple fitness rooms and showers.
"There's not many gyms with the whole package that we have," Foulk said. "A little something for everybody."
The gym offers classes for jujitsu, kick boxing cardio, weight loss boot camp, yoga, TRX suspension and pound fit. There are no signup or maintenance fees, of hidden costs, Foulk said.
Membership costs $25 a month, or $39 for gym membership and unlimited classes. The gym is open 24 hours a day, with punch code access for members.
